Kai and Caleb Goodacre have been kidnapped just as rumors of a cult sweeping across the reservation leads Maggie and Hastiin to investigate an outpost, and what they find there will challenge everything they've come to know in this action-packed sequel to Trail of Lightning.

It's been four weeks since the bloody showdown at Black Mesa, and Maggie Hoskie, Diné monster hunter, is trying to make the best of things. Only her latest bounty hunt has gone sideways, she's lost her only friend, Kai Arviso, and she's somehow found herself responsible for a girl with a strange clan power.

Then the Goodacre twins show up at Maggie's door with the news that Kai and the youngest Goodacre, Caleb, have fallen in with a mysterious cult, led by a figure out of Navajo legend called the White Locust. The Goodacres are convinced that Kai's a true believer, but Maggie suspects there's more to Kai's new faith than meets the eye. She vows to track down the White Locust, then rescue Kai and make things right between them.

Her search leads her beyond the Walls of Dinétah and straight into the horrors of the Big Water world outside. With the aid of a motley collection of allies, Maggie must battle body harvesters, newborn casino gods, and, ultimately, the White Locust himself. But the cult leader is nothing like she suspected, and Kai might not need rescuing after all. When the full scope of the White Locust's plans are revealed, Maggie's burgeoning trust in her friends and herself will be pushed to the breaking point, and not everyone will survive.

"These books are so amazing! As a Diné (Navajo) person, it is so refreshing to see myself in a genre where Natives in general are so under represented. The first book, Trail of Lighting is the first time I read about a Diné Woman Protagonist. It made me emotional. Reading about Maggie again in the follow up novel means that Roanhorse is making a space in SciFi literature for Native (Navajo) people. Her take on culture is respectful and the weaving of Diné words within the book makes the book mean even more to someone like me, A Diné person from Dinétah. I wish I had books like this as a teenager. I can only imagine the positive impact it would have had on me. My family and I love these first two books so far and cannot wait to see what else Roanhorse has in store for Dinétah."

Storm of Locusts Audible Audio Edition Rebecca Roanhorse Tanis Parenteau Audible Studios Books Reviews

  • Storm of Locust is a fantastic follow up to Trail of Lightning and avoids the sophomore slump by expanding the world beyond Walls of Dinétah and taking a look at how the rest of the southwest has fared. It is clear that Ms Roanhorse has put a lot of thought into how modern day politics would play out in an apocalypse after the national government collapses. There was one group mentioned that is mentioned in passing that I actually laughed out loud when reading as it was so unexpected. I read it cover to cover as it is the kind of book that just flies by and leave you sad when it is over because the epilogue sets up the next book in the series so well. As fun as the road trip was, I hope the next book focuses back to within the Walls of Dinétah to continue to expand the Sixth World. I just need to convince some friends to read this so I can have someone to talk to about it.
  • These books are so amazing! As a Diné (Navajo) person, it is so refreshing to see myself in a genre where Natives in general are so under represented. • I’ve really enjoyed getting to know Maggie and the other characters in the Sixth World books. I think the post-apocalyptic world that the author has built is interesting. In this action-packed story, we see some growth and changes in Maggie and see old friends and meet some new. I deducted a star because of poor editing that interrupted the flow of the story. There were too many simple errors for a second book. In spite of that issue, I highly recommend this series and I’m looking forward to the next book.
  • If you like Patricia Briggs’ Mercy Thompson’s world or Ilona Andrews’ Kate Daniels series, you’ll love this. Well written and edited; engaging from beginning to end; incorporating Native American legends you may never heard of before. Enough has been written on European myths. Time to learn about some of the “home-grown” histories and learn a new prospective. One of my favorite lines (paraphrased) Natives Americans had no problem adjusted to a world-wide post-apocalyptic world, their own apocalypse happened with the arrival of the Europeans. I believe Rebecca is going to be the “author to watch” as she continues to bring a new voice to the Urban Fantasy world. Looking forward to a long story arc.
  • This book continued to build on the wonderful character development and world building of the first book, while leaving a clear path forward for more books in the series. I had this book pre-ordered as both a and audiobook version. I’m making an effort to add more #ownvoice authors & books to my bookshelf, and Rebecca Roanhorse has earned a permanent place on my bookshelf. I cannot wait to see what’s coming next, both in the series and from the author!
  • This time, Maggie leaves the walls of Dinétah to rescue Kai -- who might or might not want to be rescued in the first place. Along the way we meet Diné gods and a few other people with Clan powers... as well as a whole lot of people who seriously need killing.

I suspect a few of them will return in the next book.

I'm already waiting for the next book. (I am *really* hoping there's a next book!)
  • Storm of Locusts was a whirlwind of a sequel, everything I enjoyed about Trail of Lightning and more. Roanhorse's well-written action sequences, vivid post-apocalyptic setting, and morally gray characters came together into a book I had a hard time putting down. I loved the development of Maggie Hoskie as a character, and the found-family theme is a spot of brightness in an otherwise fairly grim story.
  • The Sixth World series continues with Maggie Hoskie facing new perils, with new allies and new enemies. Action packed, but there are also quieter, poignant character moments. True rating would be closer to 4.5, and I can't wait for more stories in this sequence.
